When it comes to public relations the public tends to think of it as a form of manipulation, and see public relations practitioners as con-artists. What most people don’t realize is that public relations is geared towards establishing a positive and strong relationship between the client and its audience(s).

—Public relations establishes and maintains mutually beneficial relationships between an organization and various publics. There are a variety of things a PR practitioner could specialize in: counseling, media relations (publicity), employee relations, community relations, crisis communication, fundraising and research.

If someone is a public relations practitioner, they must abide by the Public Relations Society of America’s (PRSA) code of ethics. The code is a set of values those in the profession must follow – such as honesty, loyalty and fairness. Though a PR practitioner must be loyal to its client(s), they must remain loyal to the profession itself.
